This crumb cake has been a staple of New York bakeries for centuries and it is one of the best ways to satisfy a sweet crumb cake recipe. This cake is very buttery tight crumbed and this cake is baked with a thick layer of crumbs. The crumbs are a simple combination of brown sugar, flour, butter and cinnamon and the cake is very sweet and very soft cake and topped with dusting of powdered sugar.

This cake is slightly crunchy of the crumbs combination perfect with the soft, moist and you making this cake I sure and this cake baking time just 1 hour 40 minutes. This cake topped with a dusting of powdered sugar  and this cake is crumb topping with a very thick and this cake is not hard, dense or not crunchy recipe, it is perfect with soft crumb cake and it is taste very sweet.

Ingredients:

This cake has two ingredients in my classic cake recipes. So all of you know that it is good flavourful and moist as the ingredients in the cake and crumb topping are the same. These are- 

Crumb Topping make:-

  • 3 cup cake flour 
  • 2 stick softened, unsalted butter (225gm or 1 cup)
  • 2 or 3 cup granulated sugar (130gm)
  • 2 or 3 cup dark brown sugar(130 or 135gm)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Cake making:-

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cup cake flour (310gm or 10.75 ounces)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200gm or 7 ounces)
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter (170gm or 3/4 cup)
  • 2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup low fat buttermilk
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder

Ingredients instruction:-

All purpose flour – cake flour or any all purpose cake flour you can also use to make this recipe.

Granulated sugar – to be sweeten the cake

Brown sugar – to be sweeten the crumb

Milk – plant based, cow milk or buttermilk

Sour cream – Greek yogurt or sour cream

Unsalted butter – I always use unsalted butter because I like to have control of salt level but use what you have. 

Vanilla extract – I use almond extract. The recipe test is also amazing but use what you have.

Cinnamon – this product for the crumb topping.

Powder sugar – it is used just for serving looks. 

Baking powder or soda – use what you have.

Salt – the right amount uses what you have.

Large egg – you want to use. 

How to make New York Style crumb cake?

Preparation before making the cake: First you go to the side of the oven then preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly brush a 9 inch square baking pan with butter and dust with flour, or line it with parchment paper and set it. You can use glass or ceramic. The bake time is similar for each, but you use a toothpick to test for doneness. But a metal baking pan cooks the cake faster.  Now you will try this recipe.

Make crumb topping:

Next you mix the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon and salt together in a mixer in a large bowl and Stir in the ingredients mix very well when this butter is melted, then you add flour and gently mix the flour using a fork. Now you keep the mixture as a large crumble but you do not over mix. If you over mix then this will turn into a thick paste and side it. Now our making crumb topping is ready and you will go next step – 

Make the cake process

Step- 1:- Now you take a large bowl and mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together this ingredients mix very well. You use a hand or stand mixer with a paddle attachment, then beat the butter and granulated sugar together on high speed until the mixer is very smooth or creamy,  then it is about just for 3 minutes.    

Then this mixture is scrape down the sides and up the bottom of the bowl with a spatula as needed. Add the egg, sour cream and vanilla extract. Then beat on medium high speed until the combine when you look at the mixer is curdled. Then scrape down the sides and up the bottom of the bowl as needed. With the mixer on low speed, mix the dry ingredients until smooth. But if you over mix then the butter will be sticky, thick and creamy. 

Step- 2:- You spread the batter all purpose into the baking pan. Top with crumb topping. Then you use a silicone spatula or the back of a large spoon because press the crumb topping tightly down into the cake so it sticks. 

Step- 3:– Bake for 45 or 50 minutes. Baking time keeps an eye on your cake and checking at 40 or 45 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and if you see the top of the cake is brown, then you take it out too quickly in the oven, then loosely cover it with aluminium foil.

Step- 4:- Now you keep it on a wire rack. Then you take a cake to slightly cool for at least 45- 50 minutes before cutting. If you remember desired dust with sugar powder before slicing and serving. At least the cake is ready and then serve it with family or friends and enjoy eating. 

My Few Notes: Baking the cake you cover tightly and refrigerate for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Then you preserved it for many days. Sour cream is an ingredient in this cake but I do not recommend it. I suggest removing fat from this cake by using a lower fat yogurt or sour cream alternative.

You can choose the tools for mixer combine then use Glass Mixing bowls or you use Electric Mixer. 

Tips and Tricks: You regularly use light brown sugar then you will work as well. I like to use dark brown sugar to make the cake. 

When you mix butter that is too hot in the sugars will cause the sugars to melt. Then you want to be very careful while mixing any type of topping, especially when you are using such a thick layer.

This is one of these recipes where you want to go all in. If however you only have a low fat yogurt you can use this recipe. Then you the ingredients measuring the proper egg amount then without the measuring device. So you can still scramble your eggs into a bowl and you use a teaspoon for the measuring. 

So, cake for breakfast it is always a good idea for me. This cake crumb layer is half of the entire cake when the cake is very soft and sweet.
